Allergy Testing

What is allergy testing?

Allergy testing refers to two types of tests used to determine the source of your allergic reaction. After you’ve discussed your signs and symptoms with your Advance Medical Group provider, they either perform a skin or blood test to confirm your diagnosis.

Skin test

To perform the skin test, your provider pricks an area of the skin, exposing you to small amounts of different allergens. Depending on when and how your skin reacts, your provider is able to determine your specific allergy.

Blood test

Blood tests can also be used to test for specific allergies. After taking a sample of your blood, your provider sends it off to the lab to test for allergy-causing antibodies and sensitivity to certain allergens.

What are the different types of allergies?

There are a number of different types of allergies, including food allergies and airborne allergies. You can also be allergic to certain medications and substances. Some of the more common allergens include:

  • Penicillin
  • Pet dander
  • Pollen
  • Mold
  • Peanuts
  • Soy
  • Fish
  • Eggs
  • Latex

Knowing what you’re allergic to plays a major role in managing your symptoms. If you suspect you’re experiencing an allergy, it’s important to discuss your condition with an experienced health care provider at Advance Medical Group.

What are the symptoms of allergies?

The symptoms of allergies can vary greatly depending on the specifics of your condition. Some of these symptoms include:

  • Hives
  • Itchiness
  • Rash
  • Face Swelling
  • Itchiness of the nose
  • Sneezing
  • Stuffy nose
  • Watery or irritated eyes
  • Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat
  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of breath

Allergy symptoms vary from person to person. Some people experience inconvenient, but manageable symptoms, while others run the risk of severe harm or death.

How are allergies treated?

The most effective approach to treating allergies is prevention. This is why allergy testing is so important. With the knowledge of your specific allergy triggers, you can limit your exposure and effectively reduce your allergic reactions and symptoms.

In addition to avoiding your triggers, medication can also help limit your body’s reaction to allergens. Patients with severe allergies are at risk of anaphylaxis, a potentially fatal allergic reaction that can cause tightness of the throat, vomiting, and cardiac arrest.

If you suffer from severe allergies, you may need to carry epinephrine, an emergency shot that can reduce severe allergic reactions.

If you’re experiencing the symptoms of allergies, schedule your allergy testing by calling Advance Medical Group, or booking an appointment online.
